Traffic Violations – Fines & Points
The following is a short-list of some motorcycle-related infractions and their associated fines & points. A more comprehensive and up-to-date list of fines & points can be found on the ICBC website:
Licensing
- Drive contrary to restriction (ie. after sunset) – $109 / 3 pts
- IMPORTANT: Riding with a supervisor (ie. friend or family member) does NOT waive the restrictions on your license.
- Fail to display “L” or “N” sign in violation of driver’s licence condition – $109
- Fail to produce driver’s licence or insurance – $81
Motorcycle-Specific
- Operate motorcycle-not on seat – $121 / 2 pts
- Fail to use foot pegs or floorboards – $109
- Ride motorcycle without required helmet – $138
General Infractions
- Drive without due care – $368 / 6 pts
- Drive without consideration – $196 / 6 pts
- Using electronic device while driving – (starting at) $368 / 4 pts
- Unnecessary Noise – $109 / 3 pts
- Excessive speed – (starting at) $368 / 3 pts
- Fail to slow down or move over near stopped official vehicle – $173 / 3 pts
- Slow driving (impeding traffic) – $121 / 3 pts
- Slow vehicle not on right (blocking passing lane) – $109 / 3 pts
- U-turn (intersection) – $167 / 2pts
- Lane change solid line – $109 / 2 pts
Did you know …
- At the discretion of the police officer, a single violation can be charged multiple times under different subsections of the MVA;
- ie. Not displaying your “L” or “N” is a violation of MVA 25(15) and 30.10, resulting in a combined fine of $218 & 3 demerit points;
- Offences carrying penalty points can lead to a driving prohibition, for any driver, under the authority and discretion of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles. If the driver is in the Novice stage, the 24 month Novice period starts again from the beginning once the prohibition is complete and the driver’s licence is returned to the driver.
